9 Amazing Anti-Aging Foods for Healthy, Youthful Skin

We all know that eating right is key as we age. Even small changes to our diet can have a big impact. But what does food really do to keep us looking and feeling younger?  Food delivers much needed nutrients to your body. Some protect skin cells from the sun’s rays and keep your skin hydrated. Other nutrients can be used to increase cell turnover to reveal healthier skin underneath, and still others build strong cell walls for smooth, firm, young-looking skin.

But can food really age you? Ever heard of “free radicals”? They are harmful molecules that can build up in cells and cause damage to other molecules, such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. This damage may increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. These molecules can come from processed meats, red meat, high glycemic foods, and alcohol.

Below is a list of foods that are recommended to fight aging skin and keep you feeling younger.

Note: These foods should be organically grown, free of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes. They should be eaten without added sugars.

So, what should you be eating? Here are some of the best foods for healthy, radiant skin in no particular order:

1. Blueberries

Blueberries are among the most antioxidant-rich foods on earth. They are often on everyone’s list of superfoods for good reason.  Remember, antioxidants are substances that can help protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals and environmental factors. But you don’t have to just settle for blueberries.... all berries really are excellent, nutritious food choices.

2. Oranges

packed with water and vitamin C, oranges keep your skin hydrated while helping your body produce collagen, a key protein that keeps skin firm and fights the appearance of aging. Did you know that a single orange has more than 100 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C! It makes it a great snack if you’re in a rush or between meals. However, be careful when drinking your vitamin C because some orange juices are full of sugar.

3. Salmon

Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fats. These help keep skin moisturized, reduce inflammation, and may even aid in guarding against skin cancer. Be careful though where you get your salmon. Salmon raised in freshwater in best. Look for the word “sustainable” when buying your salmon.

4. Pomegranates

another excellent source of vitamin C are pomegranates. They also have antioxidants that fight free radicals and promote skin tone. However, to get the most out of pomegranates, eat the seeds don’t just drink the juice! The seeds contain most of the fruit’s fiber.

5. Tomatoes

Besides vitamin C, tomatoes contain lycopene, an important antioxidant that protects skin from sun damage and promotes circulatory health.

6. Avocados

Avocados are rich in the healthy fats (monounsaturated fats) that help develop and maintain healthy cells and also lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. They also contain vitamins A and E, which guard against UV rays and keep skin moisturized. Another powerful antioxidant it contains is glutathione. Glutathione is a substance produced by the liver and involved in many body processes including tissue building and repair, making chemicals and proteins needed in the body, and in immune system function. And finally, these amazing power foods produce a compound known as Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) that has anti-aging effects.

7. Green Tea

We are all aware that hydration is essential for healthy skin. Green tea contains antioxidants, vitamin B3, and a chemical (EGCG) that helps skin cells stay healthy. What is EGCG? Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a unique plant compound that may help to reduce inflammation, aid weight loss, and prevent conditions like heart disease.

Don’t want to give up your morning coffee? Green tea also contains caffeine! Note: sweetening your green tea with honey provides yet more antioxidants and, unlike regular sugar, won’t cause skin inflammation.

8. Kale

High in potassium, Kale keeps skin cells hydrated and firm. It also has vitamin K, which aids with blood clotting and can help with spider veins, scars, and circles under the eyes.

9. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A and antioxidants. And again, these help fight against free radicals that damage your body’s molecules. Also, antioxidants like beta carotene help reduce or prevent oxidative stress in the body. By reducing oxidative stress in the body, antioxidants may help protect against conditions such as certain cancers.

Conclusion

Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential especially ones that are high in antioxidants and low in the kinds of quickly-digested carbs (like those in russet potatoes and white rice) that can spike your blood sugar. Even if you’re not ready to change all your food habits, simply adding one or two of these foods or drinks can start you on a journey of looking at food as a way to combat aging and prolonging your life.
