Don’t Suffer with Hair Loss...Talk to The Experts

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

Often women just assume that hair loss at a certain age is normal and that there is nothing to be done about it. Not true! Combating hair loss is part of a successful anti-aging campaign. As women, we know our hair is very important to us, so fighting to keep it is a battle worth fighting. Unfortunately, we are inundated with marketing about supplements, hair products, and tools, creams, and medicines. It can be overwhelming.

Did you know that the global hair loss and growth treatments and products market size was USD 3.40 billion in 2023 and will reach USD 5.66 billion by 2032*.

Then the question becomes, who do we trust? Who do we turn to?

Who Treats Hair Loss in Women?

It is highly recommended to see your doctor first, as they can run blood tests to identify potential root causes and determine if a referral to a dermatologist, endocrinologist, gynecologist, or other specialist is necessary. Dermatologists specialize in diagnosing hair loss by evaluating test results, examining hair follicle health, and assessing hereditary conditions. Endocrinologists and gynecologists can help if the hair loss is related to hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid disorders or hormonal changes during menopause, or other reproductive health issues. The sooner you start treatment, the more effective it will be.

What tests should I expect them to run?

The doctor will likely run blood tests on you to find a root cause and get levels to measure any progress.

Here are a few:

Thyroid Test

It is important to determine if you have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).  Either can cause severe and prolonged loss of hair. Regrowth can be done with successful treatment of the thyroid disorder. Unfortunately, it often takes several months.

Hormone Levels Test

Hormonal imbalances are a major cause of hair loss. For instance, estrogen, which is known to promote hair growth, lessens during menopause. This disrupts the hair growth cycle, resulting in thinning hair, hair breakage, and more.

Ferritin Serum Test

Ferritin is a blood protein that contains iron. A blood test can determine how much iron the body stores.* Low ferritin levels show iron deficiency anemia and point to potential causes of hair loss. Maintaining sufficient ferritin levels is vital for healthy hair growth.

Once your doctor has these results, they will be able to put together a game plan. But keep in mind that blood results are only half the equation. Your personal health information is critical to diagnosing and reversing hair loss.

What Questions Should I Expect from My Doctor?

We all know that you are given a very brief time with your doctor. Go ahead and be prepared for your consultation. Of course, there are always basic questions about your health, but go beyond that, focus on potential hair loss questions, and have your answers ready ahead of time.

Sample questions:

  • How much hair have you noticed you lose in a day?

  • When did this start?

  • Was your hair loss sudden or gradual over time?

  • Does your family have a history of male and female hair loss?

  • What hair products do you use daily?

  • What hair tools do you use? (straightener, flat iron, blow dryer)

  • What kind of diet do you maintain?

  • Do you take vitamins or other supplements?

  • Have you recently given birth?

  • What are all the medications you are on now and have taken in the last year?

  • Are you under a lot of stress or suffering from depression?

  • Have you ever tried or been prescribed hair growth medications (Minoxidil, Rogaine)

BONUS: We have put together a sample questionnaire based on research from several top doctor and dermatologists’ intake forms. You can download it here. Those questions will give you a general idea of what doctors are interested in knowing about you.

What Questions Should I Ask My Doctor?

Knowing what to ask is important whenever you go to a medical appointment. Do your homework on hair loss, but be careful not to go down a Google rabbit hole! You do not want to scare yourself or be led to buy a certain supplement or procedure. Simply write a list of questions to help you understand your hair loss journey.

Example questions:

  • What causes of my hair loss are easily fixed, and which are irreversible?

  • Do I have to be put on medication, or can it be fixed with diet or lifestyle change?

  • Is there a holistic way to fight hair loss?

  • What are the side effects of the medication you are prescribing?

  • How long do I need to wait to see any difference?

  • If I don’t see any difference, what should I do?

  • If you take me off a certain medication to stop hair loss, what is the downside/upside to that?

Conclusion

Remember, the best outcomes come from being well-prepared and informed. Take the time to do your homework and understand your options. By clearly describing your concerns and goals, you can help your doctor identify the root cause and provide the most effective guidance for your unique needs.
